Criticism of the conditions under which the game was played Although I ultimately agree with the assertion made that it is not an ideal situation to begin a game without adequate opportunity to warm up, I feel that I might briefly write a comment on this matter. Given that HRK had travelled for eight hours and were faced with the prospect of a further six hours on the road, I was particularly loathe to have to tell them that the game would not then take place. Had the game not begun then, this is exactly what would have happened. I wonder what the reaction would then have been to the decision. Aside from that aspect, the attitude of those responsible for the following men's game (including abusive comments that the ladies game was indeed allotted its full 80 min plus time for stoppages), did not serve to further a positive outcome for any of the teams on the day nor for the supporters who had to endure the lenghty delay. While I accept fully any criticism of my decision, I would like to appeal to those responsible for the fixtures that in the future we see no repeat of a game scheduled for 16.00 with another game scheduled for 17.00, particularly when the earlier kick-off involves a team with a considerable distance to travel. I have yet to see an 80 minute game played in 60 minutes. I hope that this situation serves as an impulse to ensure that this situation does not happen again and that no referee it put in the same position as I was. Yours in rugby, Killian O'Brien |

One slight amendment It is moreover worthy of note that the game began at 16.35, not as it written in the report at 16.20, thereby giving HRK a window of 25 minutes from arrival until kick off. Admittedly not particularly long but in the interests of correctness perhaps worthy of being mentioned. |
